This fundamental refers to the protocols that must be followed for the identification,
handling, and work with dangerous substances.
The key is prevention.
This point also includes rules regarding evacuation plans, storage of substances, audits, among others:
• Evacuation plans must be clearly marked and all escape routes, emergency exits, and fire protection equipment must be free of obstacles.
• An evacuation drill must be carried out at least once a year on each shift.
• Smoking is prohibited in production and logistics areas; it is only allowed in designated areas.
• Combustible material must be protected from any ignition source.
• Flammable materials must be stored in insurance approved cabinets in accordance with legal requirements and properly grounded.
• Chemicals must be identified with a legible label and the expiration date must be respected as well as storage in the identified areas, maximum quantities and based on the compatibility matrix between products defined by the site.
• CMR category 1A and 1B chemicals (according to CE 1272/2008) are completely prohibited. CMR Category 2 chemicals are also prohibited but may only be used with the approval of a Group (BG) representative.
• The Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) system should be inspected and cleaned frequently (at least annually) to remove buildup of flammable material.
• “Spark arrestors” must be installed.
• All human actions of fire safety audits by the insurer must be implemented to reach the standard level.
The specific handling of chemicals is also accompanied by protocols that indicate
points such as identification, storage, risk analysis, exposure, and handling:
• A database of chemicals used at plant level should be available.
• SDS for each chemical must be available.
• The plant must measure and control the use of CMR 1 and CMR 2 chemicals.
• Fire cabinets for bulk storage of flammable substances must be approved by FM Global.
• Stored chemicals should always be evaluated for compatibility.
• For any other flammable material, a cover must be designed to prevent any release of vapor.
• Any flammable material must be stored in a secure container. Clear zoning is needed,
and the maximum volume stored in the compartment must be defined.
• Stock levels should be kept to an absolute minimum on production lines or at the point of use.
• They are not stored in the open at the point of use.
Safety is a collective responsibility, where each of us has a role to play. Let us encourage a safety culture through the correct management of risk
situations inside and outside our facilities.
